How Your Venue Earns Mosey Gold

Mosey · 22 September 2026 · 4 min read

Gold is the strongest signal a venue can carry on Mosey, and you cannot buy it. Not with a subscription, not with advertising, not by asking us. There is no tier that includes it and no budget that moves it.

That is not a limitation of the product. It is the product.

How it is calculated

Every night, each venue's rating average is recalculated and compared against two numbers:

  • Earn Gold at 4.70
  • Keep it until the average falls below 4.40
  • Between those two, nothing changes either way

Two thresholds rather than one, because a venue sitting exactly on a single line would gain and lose the mark on almost every new rating — telling its customers it had Gold on Monday and quietly dropping it on Tuesday. The gap means Gold moves when your food changes, not when your arithmetic wobbles.

What is excluded from the number

Three kinds of rating do not count, and the first two are the ones venues ask about:

  1. Ratings left by your own team. An owner or staff member rating their own venue is not evidence about it, and the exclusion is automatic rather than something we police case by case.
  2. Ratings from restricted accounts. An account we have restricted does not get to decide who is good.
  3. Moderated ratings. A rating removed from the public record cannot go on holding up a quality claim.

So the score Gold is decided on is not always the same as the plain average shown elsewhere. Wherever the word "Gold" appears next to a number, that number is the one it was actually decided on.

There is no minimum rating count

A new venue with very few ratings can hold Gold on the strength of them. That is a deliberate trade and it cuts both ways: it lets somewhere genuinely good be found in its first month rather than its second year, and it means a single disappointed customer moves your average more than it would at a hundred ratings.

The rating count is shown beside the mark, so a customer can see how much is behind it.

What Gold actually does for you

It replaces your rating number on every card, rather than adding a badge beside it. A Gold venue shows Gold; everyone else shows a score. It is also a filter customers use directly, which is where it earns its keep — in a smaller town there may be two or three venues holding it, and a customer filtering for Gold is choosing from that list.

How to get there

There is no growth hack here, which is the point. What actually moves it:

  1. Ask. Most people who enjoyed a meal will rate it and would never have thought to. A line on the receipt or a word at the table is the whole intervention.
  2. Get your dishes named. A rating that names the lamb is worth more to the next customer than a number, and dish-level ratings feed a second discovery surface entirely.
  3. Fix the thing you already know about. Every venue has one. It is usually in the ratings you have.
  4. Reply. A reply is public and it is read by people deciding.

What we will not do

We will not sell it, bundle it, or let advertising influence it — and no paid product on Mosey changes a venue's position, prominence or ordering either. If it could be bought, a customer filtering for Gold would be filtering for advertising budget, and the filter would be worthless to them and therefore to you.

What it connects to

  • Get discovered — where Gold sits among everything else customers use to find you.
  • Menus — a named dish is a rating that carries further.
  • Loyalty — regulars rate more than strangers do.
  • Analytics — your ratings over time, and which dishes are named in them.

Questions

Common questions

Can I pay for Mosey Gold?

No. It cannot be bought at any price, no subscription tier includes it, and no advertising product moves a venue closer to it.

How does my venue earn Gold?

By reaching a 4.70 rating average. It is recalculated every night.

How would I lose it?

Only if the average falls below 4.40. The gap between the two thresholds means the mark moves when your food changes rather than on every new rating.

Do ratings from my own staff count?

No. Ratings left by owners or staff of the venue are excluded automatically.

How many ratings do I need?

There is no minimum. A new venue can hold Gold on very few ratings — which also means a single bad one moves the average more than it would at a hundred.

Is Gold the same as being verified?

No. Verification is about identity; Gold is about how your food was rated. They are separate.

What does Gold change for customers?

It replaces your rating number on every card, and it is a filter customers use directly — in a smaller town, a customer filtering for Gold is choosing from a very short list.

How do I get more ratings?

Ask. Most people who enjoyed a meal would rate it and never thought to. A line on the receipt or a word at the table is the whole intervention.

Can advertising affect my position or prominence?

No paid product on Mosey changes a venue's position, prominence or ordering. If it did, the Gold filter would be filtering for advertising budget.
